Figma MCP — Plan Limits and Tool Call Caps

How Figma plan tiers affect MCP tool call availability when using Claude’s Figma integration.

Why / When to Use

Reference when planning AI-assisted Figma reviews, designing prompts that need multiple Figma tool calls, or deciding whether to upgrade a Figma plan.

Core Concept

The Figma MCP integration has tool call limits tied to the Figma plan. On the Starter plan, there is a hard cap on the number of MCP tool calls per session. Once hit, Claude cannot make additional Figma API calls and falls back to working from memory of what was already fetched.

Key Options / Variants

Starter plan — Limited MCP tool calls per session. Suitable for light single-file reviews but will block mid-session on complex multi-screen analyses.

Professional / Organization plans — Higher or uncapped tool call limits. Required for comprehensive AI-assisted design reviews spanning many screens or components.

Workarounds on Starter

  • Batch your review into focused sessions: review one section per session to stay under the cap.
  • Pre-fetch key screens at session start before asking analysis questions (prioritise which screens matter most).
  • Export screens as images and analyse via image upload if MCP cap is hit.
  • Use Claude’s memory of already-fetched content for follow-up questions after the cap is reached.

Gotchas

  • The cap resets per session — starting a new conversation resets the counter.
  • Tool call limit error message appears mid-review; Claude will still attempt to help from cached context.
  • FigJam diagram creation and read operations both count toward the cap.
